My best math teacher was at Shady Side Academy in the 8th grade. He made
math fun, useful and practical. We got to shoot craps in class. We got to play
against the house for points on our grade. We learned that lottery tickets were
a tax on folks who failed math.
In the many years since I left high school, I have
never been presented with the problem of time to fill a swimming pool. In
the real world I have never been required to calculate the time to fill a
swimming pool with more than one size hose, with drain open or shut. I
also have never encountered the problem of determining the crossing point
of two trains which departed from different cities at different speeds with at
least 2 stops made by each train.
