This web site uses Google Analytics to track visitors. From time spent on site data it is clear that dog pictures are the most engaging web content found on daveahl.net. Picasa face recognition - "face matching" software has been used to tag humans in pictures posted to the web. When will the Picasa software match dog pictures for the tagging of dog pictures? This site and Packetjam my dog Dilly's site has many more dog pictures than human pictures.

Using specific Aviation examples to teach math to generate enthusiasm for math among 7th or 8th graders? I always believed that the  #1 rule of teaching was "don't bore the kids".  This idea is to determine if I'm creative enough to make "airplane math" fun? Could I inspire kids to believe that the study of mathematics would help solve real life problems? Use the lens of mathematics to see, understand and most importantly solve real day to day problems. We often hear the expression "crunch the numbers", "do the math" but lots of people who hear this don't actually do it. Why? They were never taught or encouraged.

http://www.daveahl.net/math/

My best math teacher was at Shady Side Academy in the 8th grade. He made math fun, useful and practical. We got to shoot craps in class. We got to play against the house for points on our grade. We learned that lottery tickets were a tax on folks who failed math.
In the many years since I left high school, I have never been presented with the problem of time to fill a swimming pool. In the real world I have never been required to calculate the time to fill a swimming pool with more than one size hose, with drain open or shut.  I also have never encountered the problem of determining the crossing point of two trains which departed from different cities at different speeds with at least 2 stops made by each train.

However I have been asked to calculate if my full loaded airplane could clear a 100 foot obstacle (a power line) 300 feet from the end of 6,500 foot runway at an airport 7,000 above sea level on a no wind day when it's 90 degrees.

Because of my 8th grade math teacher I solved this equation correctly. I'm not so sure I did as well on the swimming pool fill problems.
